While I had promised to catch up with you soon, I became a little self centred.
I was indeed waiting for my niece’s project grades to be declared. (please refer to my earlier blog) Well, truly speaking she fared much better than her own and my expectations. Not only that, she also received appreciation from her project guide.
Ironically he appreciated her for planning and scheduling the project well. He specifically mentioned that all the 4M resources (man, machine, materials and money) were well managed within the given constraints.
While she is happy about two things; a) project completion and b) project guide’s appreciation, she has learnt the second important lesson of Project Management, i.e., project planning & scheduling of resources.
Recently, I once again read an online article, paying emphasis on project & risk management, more as a coincidence.
The year 1984 was a very special one for India and the date 2nd April 1984 went into the annals of its history. India sent its first citizen into space. Wing Commander (retd.) Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to go into space aboard Soyuz T-11 spacecraft.
In a recent interview conducted by one of the popular online news portals he was asked amongst other questions as to what should Indian space scientists and space organizations learn from other leading space organizations across the world, as they have already taken giant strides in recent years. His spontaneous response was that Indian space scientists and agencies need to learn project & risk management.(You may refer this link for a detailed interview)
Upon being asked what could Indian space scientists teach other space organizations, his reply was frugality and innovation. This instantly reminded me of the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan wherein India became the first country in the world to land its spacecraft successfully in the very first attempt, and the Indian Prime Minister’s comment that the whole mission was completed in less than USD 100 million, which was by far much lesser than the production cost of a leading Hollywood space movie.
Indeed spacecraft launches and space exploration is a humongous project, I thought for myself!
I am now curious to explore the various facets and attributes of planning, scheduling, budgeting, executing and managing a project of such or similar magnitude.
